Uruguay
Weyerhaeuser Uruguay S.A., Colonvade S.A. and Los Piques S.A. are all operations wholly owned by Weyerhaeuser Company in Uruguay.
Weyerhaeuser established its presence in Uruguay in 1996 through a joint venture in Colonvade S.A. Los Piques was purchased from West Fraser Timber Company of Canada and Associates in June 2001. In 2006 Weyerhaeuser established its wholly owned subsidiary, Weyerhaeuser Uruguay, which assumed 100% ownership in Colonvade S.A. and Los Piques S.A. in 2007.
Weyerhaeuser Uruguay, Colonvade and Los Piques’ total land base as of the first quarter of 2008 is 140,000 hectares which are distributed in the Departments of Rivera, Tacuarembó, Cerro Largo and Trienta y Tres. Of these 55,000 (As of Q4-07) are planted with pine, eucalyptus and poplar.
Depending on its suitability, non forested land is destined to other uses such as cattle and sheep grazing, agriculture for biofuels, apiculture or left in its natural state as environmental reserve tracts.
Harvesting operations began in 2005 with the first commercial thinning operations on company land. Projected harvests for 2007 are 150,000 cubic meters with a projected total of 2.5 million cubic meters of raw material in 2012 as industrial capacity for the manufacturing of products in the region expands. Harvesting and transport of the logs to the mills is performed by mechanized systems utilizing contract crews that are required to adhere to Weyerhaeuser’s strict safety standards.
The company’s first plywood and veneer mill began operating in Tacuarembó in June 2006. In 2007, the company announced the continuation of its industrial growth with new industrial investments in Tacuarembó that will be complemented by expansion of its plantation acquisitions. Both investments will include renewable energy facilities operating using mill residuals and biomass fuel sources. Further analysis is being conducted for manufacturing investments that will include plants for biofuels, engineered wood products and lumber. A total of five plants distributed between the Departments of Rivera, Tacuarembó and Cerro Largo are anticipated. Because of the positive economic impact these investments will have on the interior of Uruguay and its regional economies, both Colonvade and Los Piques were named “Projects of National Interest” in 1999 and 2004.
At the present time, Weyerhaeuser Uruguay has a total of 450 employees primarily concentrated in the city of Tacuarembó. Administratively, the company has 13 employees in Montevideo. The company also has a contractor work force of 1200 workers. As we continue to grow our harvesting, manufacturing and transportation operations, this figure should be in the neighborhood of 3000 direct jobs with another 6000 indirect jobs created by supporting businesses and services. Ninety percent of these jobs will be based in the interior departments.
