Investment Evaluation Department

The Investment Evaluation Department is a small group within Weyerhaeuser's finance organization that reports directly to the chief financial officer.

The Investment Evaluation Department provides key financial and analytical support; acquisitions, divestment and joint-venture support, earnings outlooks analysis; analysis supporting presentations to the board of directors; bank and rating agency review analysis supporting presentations to the board of directors; bank and rating agency review analysis; financial support for corporate strategic planning.

This managed-entry program recruits MBAs and other candidates with significant experience as business analysts. This opportunity is ideal for individuals who want to apply their analytical, leadership, and interpersonal skills toward a long-term finance/controllership or general management career at Weyerhaeuser.

The Business Analyst's Role

Weyerhaeuser competes in a highly capital-intensive industry and allocates significant capital resources to its existing businesses. We have a defined process to evaluate proposals to expand or reconfigure our business groups. Our project work falls into the following general categories:

  • New facilities and capital equipment upgrades
  • Acquisitions
  • Divestitures and closures
  • Joint ventures
  • New product commercialization
  • Other special projects as required, e.g., information technology, research & development, etc.

The Investment Evaluation Department brings conceptual and analytical skills to the capital allocation process. You will help identify and develop potential opportunities or solutions using financial and risk analysis tools. In many instances, analysts translate strategy to tactical project work. Finally, you play a pivotal role in communicating results to the senior management team.

As a member of the Investment Evaluation Department, you will also join in financial planning with treasury, corporate external reporting, investor relations and others to provide analysis on corporate financial planning activities such as:

  • Quarterly and annual earnings releases
  • Earnings forecasts
  • Preparation of board of directors' presentation materials
  • Consolidation of the company annual plan and mid-year update
  • Support for compensation planning

In the corporate finance role, you assist in preparing quarterly earnings releases and earnings outlooks. You will prepare analysis of Weyerhaeuser's performance against its peer group and broader indices as well as material for bank and rating-agency meetings. Your experience is further refined with preparation of materials for regular board of directors' meetings, including financial project work for the CFO.

Business Analyst Qualifications

  • Broad analytical capabilities sufficient to develop and/or probe business plans, including:
    • A strong understanding of general business principles of strategy, marketing, and organizational effectiveness.
    • A strong understanding of finance principles of cost of capital, net present value and risk analysis.
    • A basic understanding of accounting principles and cash flow analysis.
  • An MBA is strongly recommended for adequate breadth and depth of exposure to each discipline.
  • Significant prior work experience.
  • Effective communication and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership and analytical capability.
  • Ability to coordinate multiple priorities with tight deadlines and work well in a flow-to-work environment.
  • Strong computer skills (Microsoft Excel required).
  • Permanent right to work in the U.S.
