Benchmark Report Safety Leader

Weyerhaeuser Company was recognized as an industry safety leader in the 2008 Year-End Benchmark Report recently released by the Pulp and Paper Safety Association. Of the 20 major companies included, Weyerhaeuser’s overall recordable incident rate ranked second.

National Association Of Homebuilders Safety Awards

Winchester Homes Weyerhaeuser Real Estate Company subsidiary received two of the NAHB’S top honors: Single-Family Builder Safety Program of the Year (100 to 500 starts/year) and Innovative Safety Program/Idea of the Year.

The National Association of Home Builders Safety Awards For Excellence honor the achievements of builders and trade contractors who have developed and implemented high-quality construction safety programs.

Pulp & Paper Canada Magazine Safest Mill Award

Weyerhaeuser’s Grande Prairie, Alberta, cellulose fibers mill was named Safest Mill in Canada in the category of 50,000 to 100,000 hours per month. The honor came from Pulp & Paper Canada magazine, which has been recognizing safety efforts that go beyond the norm since 1926.

Safety + Health Magazine’s "CEOS Who Get It"

President and CEO Dan Fulton was one of 10 chief executives named to the Safety + Health list of "CEOs who get it" for 2009. Every year, Safety + Health, the monthly magazine of the National Safety Council, recognizes American CEOs who "make the safety professional’s job easier by demonstrating—through both words and actions—their commitment to worker safety and health." The magazine selects individuals who "share a dedication to employee safety as a primary goal and are cultivating safety leadership at all levels of their organizations."

U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration's Voluntary Protection Program

We participate in the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration's Voluntary Protection Program. This program promotes and recognizes effective safety and health management programs. VPP recognizes two levels of accomplishment: star and merit. Star sites serve as models for health and safety in the industry and as mentors to other companies.

Sites recently recognized by VPP include:

  • Our Tacoma, Wash., iLevel service center received VPP Star recognition including two "Best Practice" awards for contractor safety and associate on-boarding.
  • Our Coos Bay, Ore., Timberlands tree farm is the first traditional logging operation in the U.S. to achieve VPP Merit status.

AF&PA Safety Excellence Awards

Weyerhaeuser's 2008 safety record was in the top 10 percent of companies surveyed by the American Forest & Paper Association. The American Forest & Paper Association honored all member-company sites that met stiff safety criteria. Consequently, 64 Weyerhaeuser facilities in the U.S. won Safety Excellence Awards for working through 2007 without a recordable incident. Forty-two won for a year without a lost-workday case.

International Builders Show Awards

Weyerhaeuser Real Estate Company took two major awards at the International Builders Show in Orlando, Fla. Awards went to Trendmaker for Single Family Builder Safety Program of the Year and to Quadrant Homes for Single Family Builder Program of the Year.

Pulp and Paper Safety Association Awards

The Pulp and Paper Safety Association presented several Weyerhaeuser facilities with various awards for their performance in 2007. Those recognized for no lost time include:

  • the Port Wentworth, Ga., cellulose fibers mill; and
  • the Columbus, Miss., modified fibers mill; and
  • the Columbus, Miss., cellulose fibers mill.

The most improved award went to the New Bern, N.C. cellulose fibers mill. The best one-year record went to the Grande Prairie, Alberta cellulose fibers mill.

Southern Forest Products Association Sawmill Safety Awards

Weyerhaeuser Company mills in Pine Hill, Ala. and Taylor, La. were among those recognized by the Southern Forest Products Association’s 2008 Sawmill Safety Award, in recognition of their outstanding safety records throughout the year. Safety performance is judged by how each mill's safety record stacks up against mills with comparable lumber output throughout the year.
