Our community involvement is extensive. We strive to make a significant impact through financial, in-kind, and volunteer support. In the case of Hurricane Katrina, this community support included making financial contributions to relief efforts, providing much-needed building materials for local builders, and enabling hundreds of employee volunteers to participate in rebuilding projects and provide assistance to our employee families affected by the disaster. Together, these efforts provided healing and hope and served as a model for community participation.
Weyerhaeuser's giving programs include our corporate foundation, Making WAVES employee volunteer program, scholarship programs, corporate giving, and in-kind support. In 2008, these efforts totaled $11.2 million in charitable giving. But our community involvement is more than just corporate—it’s personal. In 2008, 2,335 employees and retirees completed 248 Making WAVES volunteer projects, contributing more than 17,668 volunteer hours.
