Jobs for Youth Program
Weyerhaeuser's Jobs for Youth Program is designed to assist community nonprofit organizations and young people seeking first-time summer employment. The program provides additional human resources for nonprofit groups and helps students develop real-life skills, test out career aspirations, and participate in community activities.
Interested organizations can apply to the program for a grant of up to $2,500 to hire one or more students for the summer. Applicants must:
- Be a registered Canadian charity or nonprofit society (i.e., have a Canada Customs and Revenue Agency charitable registration number or a provincial nonprofit society registration number).
- Be located in a Weyerhaeuser operating community or forest management area.
- Create a new summer job within the organization to be undertaken by youth seeking first-time employment. Jobs can be full-time, part-time, temporary, or project-specific.
- Complete an application form explaining the nature of the job being created and how it will be advertised.
- Advertise the job.
- Provide a written contract to the youth who is hired detailing responsibilities of the position, hours of work, compensation, and frequency of payment. Organizations must also commit to remit deductions to appropriate government agencies and provide the student with an income tax slip.
- Give some form of recognition to Weyerhaeuser for its contribution.
- File a short report at the end of the summer detailing their experience with the program.
In 2006, the program:
- Distributed $150,000 to 73 nonprofit organizations in four provinces—British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Ontario.
- Provided summer employment for 107 young people.
