Weyerhaeuser began with the purchase of 900,000 acres of Washington state timberland in 1900. Since, the company has grown to become a leader in the forest products industry and the largest private landowner in North America. We're looking for forestry and related majors to work alongside our timberlands and regeneration teams in Canada, and Southeast and Western United States. Western Regeneration Associate Program
Types of assignments
Engineering Associate

Work as part of a technology team developing safety, process and equipment improvements for six nursery, greenhouse and seed orchard operations within Washington and Oregon.

Nursery Grower/Technologist Associate

Work as part of a nursery team developing growing prescriptions and crop plans, tracking crop development, troubleshooting crop issues; supervising hourly and contract crews; administering site safety program. May take part in field work including sowing, transplanting, cultural treatments, inventory, lifting and packing.

Tree Breeding/Orchardist Associate

Work as part of an orchard facility team developing breeding and orchard production plans, planning and carrying out crop culture and protection treatments, doing crop inventories, troubleshooting crop issues; supervising hourly and contract crews; administering site safety program. May take part in field work including crop induction, breeding, fertilization, frost and insect protection, cone inventory, cone harvest.

Size of program Up to one to two hires per year
Length of assignment Nine to 12 months
Start date Negotiable. We like our associates to work a full production season, so start dates could be early spring, summer, fall or late fall.

Academic level Graduating seniors or MS candidates interested in a career in operations
Requirements
Engineering Associate

Degree in Agricultural Engineering or related discipline; experience with agriculture or farming operations and related equipment. High level of knowledge of mechanics, fabrication, hydraulics and irrigation. Ability to relate engineering concepts to people with various technical backgrounds. Work effectively with facility management teams, diverse work teams and vendors; ability to build consensus during decision making, initiate change and work well without supervision.

Nursery Grower/Technologist Associate

College-level coursework or equivalent basic experience in horticulture, plant biology/physiology, nursery culture; soil science, pathology/entomology, nutrition; statistics.

Tree Breeding/Orchardist Associate

College-level coursework or equivalent basic experience in plant biology/physiology, orchard culture, soil science, pathology/entomology, nutrition. Beyond basic coursework in plant breeding or tree breeding with good understanding of principles. Good quantitative skills including statistics.

Other qualifications
  • Passion for "growing"
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Willingness to work long hours, including some evenings and weekends, under sometimes cold, wet, muddy and high-stress conditions, to meet crop schedules and customer requirements.
  • Must have the physical capability to lift 50 pounds and to walk safely and easily on uneven terrain.
  • Fluency in English and Spanish (strongly desired)
  • Familiarity with irrigation/farm equipment (strongly desired)

Western Timberlands Intern Program
Description

A field-based learning opportunity focused on providing valuable experience in commercial forestry activities including growing, harvesting and marketing timber. Strong emphasis is placed on the business and financial elements of commercial forestry. Interns are involved in hands-on application of Weyerhaeuser's environmental and public resource protection standards and strategies.
