AZEK® premium trim products are manufactured with advanced engineered polymers, offering moisture resistance and durability superior to that of wood, along with low-maintenance and a limited lifetime warranty. For buyers also seeking the ultimate in design and color flexibility, it is engineered for paint, providing for a superior painted finish with no primer or special prep needed.
Along with helping customers choose the best trim for their needs, you can assist them in selecting the right paint that will ensure a long-lasting finish. As always, follow manufacturer instructions and consider these guidelines.
Choose the Right Color and Paint
When painting AZEK Trim, choosing the right paint type and color will ensure a truly low maintenance, long-lasting painted finish. Using paints that do not meet AZEK’s guidelines may cause the product to overheat, leading to issues such as warping, oil canning, or buckling.
When selecting the desired color, they will need to determine the Light Reflective Value (LRV) of that color, which the paint manufacturer can provide. The LRV number represents the percentage of light reflected by a color: The higher the LRV number, the more light is reflected; the lower the LRV, the more light is absorbed. True white has a LRV of 100 and true black has LRV of 0.
Exterior trim and siding are constantly exposed to sunlight; light that is not reflected is absorbed as energy and converted to heat. Excessive heat can cause trim and siding to expand and contract, which can cause bowing, buckling, or deformation.
To avoid this, AZEK recommends determining the LRV of your desired color before usage and make sure it follows AZEK’s paint color selection guidelines. You also can use AZEK’s Recommended Color Lists that list specific colors that can be used with AZEK Trim.
If the color has an LRV value above 55 and is available in an exterior 100% acrylic latex paint, it meets AZEK painting requirements. If the desired color has an LRV below 55, it should only be used on AZEK products if it exists as a pre-set color from a paint designed for vinyl siding or is a specialty paint with solar reflective pigments. Paints formulated for vinyl and paints with heat-reflective pigments are designed to limit heat build-up and ensure the long-term performance of PaintPro products. Always make sure your paint is suitable for exterior application and is 100% acrylic latex.
